SYMPTOMS OF ANXIETY
What are the symptoms of anxiety?
Anxiety is a physiological, behavioural and psychological response. It originates in the brain and affects your whole being.
Physiological (bodily) symptoms of severe anxiety may include:
Rapid or irregular heart beat
Muscle tension
Sweating
Churning stomach
Dry mouth
Tightness in the chest
Diarrhoea
Trembling or shaking
Feeling faint
Blurred vision
Rapid, shallow breathing
Dizziness, light-headedness, unsteadiness
Shortness of breath
A feeling of choking
Nausea
Numbness
Feeling of being out of touch with oneself
Hot flashes or chills
Psychologically, anxiety is a state of apprehension about the future and unease. Severe anxiety may involve a fear that one is losing control or going crazy or even dying.
On a behavioural level anxiety may involve excessive worry and take away your ability to act, express yourself or deal with day to day situations.
“An anxiety disorder is when worry or fear get out of control and start interfering with your life.” (au.reachout.com/all-about-anxiety-disorders)
One way of dealing with anxiety is through the application of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques. Learning how to counter negative “self-talk” and mistaken beliefs, regularly employing relaxation techniques, and exercising regularly may also help.
